How does a chiropractor help lower back pain?

A good chiropractor should do a detailed consultation, orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic examination in addition to x-rays if necessary to find out if and how they can help your lower back pain. Adjustments are performed to the spine and this helps it mechanically function better and reduce pain and muscle spasms. Therapeutic modalities can be applied to assist the muscles even more.

What evaluation techniques are used at Bodywise Chiropractic?

A detailed initial evaluation is important to your future success. At Bodywise we sit down with you and go through a thorough consultation to find out about your problem. Following this a detailed orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic examination. This includes things like testing for a range of motion, infrared scanning to asses skin temps and irritation, surface EMG to read how the nerve function is coming out of the spine in addition to palpating the spine and supporting muscles to get a full picture of the problem. We utilize in-house digital x-ray to be able to visualize the cause of the problem and help us determine the most successful way to resolve your issue. We also request past imaging/MRI scans to have any and all information that could be beneficial to you.

What type of education and training do chiropractors have?

Most chiropractors have the same basic training as an MD. The Doctor of Chiropractic degree is a 4-year degree. Most DC's also have a bachelor's degree prior to entering Chiropractic College. This amounts to about 8 years of post-secondary education. They are required to pass extensive board exams to obtain their licensure. Once licensed, they are required to take continuing education every year to keep their license up-to-date.

Can I get chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Yes. Chiropractic care during pregnancy helps your body stay well-aligned and more efficient. It helps reduce the aches, pains, and sciatica that a rapidly changing body can bring on. We have even helped turn breech babies before delivery.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?

Yes. Many children get great benefits from chiropractic care. One main reason is that it helps them live healthier and prevent some of the problems their parents may be facing. Many young athletes stay in the game because of chiropractic care. With the benefits to the nervous system it keeps their bodies functioning more efficiently and even has been shown to help with things like im,mune function.

What other conditions can be treated by chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care works with many conditions involving the nervous system, skeletal system, and muscular system. Most people know the great benefits it provides for neck pain, back pain, and headaches. We may be able to help with far more than this. People come to us for a host of different reasons. Some just come to stay healthy. We have helped people with extremity problems (things like shoulders, knees…), pregnancy and post-partum care, vertigo, TMJ, GERD, ear infections, colic, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, birth trauma, bedwetting and more. While we don't treat the symptoms of these problems, we treat the direct source of nerve irritation at the spine and the muscles and bones associated with the affected area.

Why do adjustments sometimes make a popping sound?

When a joint moves it can cause a change in the pressure of the fluid in the joint. When this changes rapidly, a large amount of tiny bubbles are released at that moment and they all pop at the same time. This is what makes this noise. If you have ever 'cracked' your knuckles it is the same concept.

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

In our office, everyone is adjusted specific to their needs. There are many types of adjustments and we utilize a number of different techniques to help everyone. Our primary technique is what people traditionally think of with chiropractors - we use our hands to help improve the function of the body. Chiropractic is from Latin and means 'done by hand'. We do have other techniques using specialized equipment and instruments that help many people as well.
